Creative possibilities of today’s technology

The Cube - Pioneering AV Technology from ReflexWalking into the recent NEC Showcase event at Vinopolis, the first thing to greet you was The Cube – an extraordinary fully immersive sensory experience.  Surrounded by dynamic visual content on all sides, people who entered it stepped right into the centre of the action.  This exciting installation designed by NEC, refined and installed by Reflex was achieved with 27 x 46” video wall modules for the walls and 9 x NEC 40” displays for the floor.  Laser projection, with HDBaseT transmitter and receiver, was used for the ceiling.  The result? Visitors were totally engulfed with imagery and sound.

Making your way upstairs to the retail area, you were faced with the Catwalk – a stunning interactive video wall. Built by Reflex using 14 x NEC 46” video wall modules, it featured interactive video wall technology where audiences could not only interact with the content, but share it on their mobile devices.  It was an installation that was specifically designed to attract shoppers and increase dwell time by driving engagement.

The purpose of both installations was to demonstrate the creative possibilities of today’s projection and screen technology in engaging and entertaining an audience.  The days of projecting an image onto a lone screen for one-way communication has evolved.  Today’s exciting installations push the technology to its limits to involve and integrate the audience.

Do you prefer a huddle or a pod?

Huddle or pod? Reflex will meet your AV design specifications.

Collaborative hubs. Huddle areas. Flexible workpods. Ten years ago no-one would know what we were talking about. The speed with which new ways of working have evolved is breath taking. It’s our job as an integrator to provide technology solutions that keep up with the growth and meet today’s needs.

Modern workplaces are changing. The cost of real estate means every square metre of space has to work hard. Infrequently used board rooms make way for more flexible spaces that are equally practical for training or video conferencing. Meetings/lectures traditionally carried out in a separate meeting room/classroom now overspill to desktops and small collaborative gatherings.

Employees who use FaceTime or Skype in their personal lives, or stream media from mobile devices to Smart TVs, naturally seek a seamless link between their home and work technologies, with the same level of ease and speed. In the world of Higher Education, the shift is away from traditional lecture settings to multi-functional learning spaces that promote group learning and sharing.

When the needs of the user are at the centre of the design, the technology can support collaboration and sharing in a meaningful way. Whether your meeting objective is to solve a problem, make a decision, plan, launch a project or even to impart news or have an announcement, a collaborative solution can be created. Fortunately creating AV solutions to meet your needs is what Reflex is all about.

Challenge Reflex! You can collaborate in a space as tiny as 2m x 2m. Give us a short brief for a small collaboration area and we’ll come up with a plan that works.

Small space functionality, transformed

Reflex bring AV designs to small spacesWorking practices are changing and there is a growth of 21st century collaborative workspaces but how can AV be used to support this movement?

We always start with the needs of the user but we find there are some common considerations that form the starting point of many specifications.

Often customers are looking for modular systems that can be added to as needs change or technologies develop. Whether you need solutions that are flexible in use, space saving in design or for a particular purpose, there are many options.

Key AV components and basic considerations when sourcing or creating your modular solution include:-

  • Display screen(s) – size and angle adjustment are important.  Touch options increase interactivity and dual systems are ideal for video conferencing.
  • Booking systems– solve the dilemma of looking for a meeting space and prevent double booking by connecting workers to meeting spaces.
  • Audio – if in an open can i buy valium in hong kong area the system may need to localise the sound to minimise wider disruption to the office. In an enclosed area, secure desktop mics may be the solution.
  • Connectivity – from cable management to wireless, and mains power to control systems. The needs are dependent on the devices deployed or brought in by users (Bring Your Own Device).
  • Auxiliary AV – The more complex the use, the more additional equipment could be needed, such as cameras or visualisers.
  • Accompanying furniture – Integrating the AV into furniture is a way of maximising the usability of small spaces.  Systems may include bespoke worktops and chairs – do these need to be height adjustable or mobile therefore wheeled and of a size to fit through doorways or in lifts?

The team at Reflex can help you work through the needs of your users and specify a solution that is right for you.

Perfectly tailored for the team or individual

Reflex meet any conference requirements as accomplished AV integrators

Working closely with world-class manufacturers, the technical team here at Reflex has used their technical knowledge and end-user experience to shape the design and functionality of products and solutions – all driven by the need to meet requirements of our customers.

As an integrator, we are superbly placed to truly understand the users’ requirements and be able to match this with our breadth of technical and product knowledge.

Working with manufacturers, we have produced some hybrid and totally bespoke solutions on behalf of customers.  For example:-

  • Dual masted eight person meeting solution for an engineering laboratory with four displays, concealed keyboards, control, power and personal audio listening system all integrated into one neat solution. The lecturer can communicate to each individual booth and send different tasks to each, communicating via a PA system, streamed to their touch screen display or mobile device.  The tasks set by the lecturer and feedback from students is not constrained to the nine solutions in the laboratory, they can be streamed anywhere in the campus and in theory anywhere in the world.
  • Bespoke five seater steel lectern incorporating a transmitter, received, blue ray player and confidence monitor and our own designed floor cable raceway supplying power and data over a suspended floor to the lectern. The raceway is an interlocking cable concealer and protector, it is limitless to the size or the amount of cables run through it, it still has the ability to access the cables when secured to the floor.
  • Upholstered FIT (Furniture Integrated with Technology) The Skylon FIT Booth and Forum combine a modern seating booth that can be fully customised and incorporates a display screen, wireless connectivity and booking system to create a handmade fully integrated AV suite.

Reflex’s Edwards pedals for charity

Bryan Edwards of Reflex is cycling the length of Britain

When Bryan Edwards, Reflex’s Head of Technical Sales, started thinking about how to celebrate his half-century, he came up with something that many people half his age would shy away from. A keen cyclist, he used his milestone birthday as a reason to fulfill one of his longstanding ambitions – to cycle the length of Britain from Land’s End to John O Groats.

Early in 2014 he signed up for the Deloitte Ride Across Britain event, raising money for the British Paralympic Association. And he fulfilled that ambition this month, completing the 969-mile ride in nine days.

The start of his endeavor was on 6th September, when, awoken fittingly by Queen’s ‘I Want to Ride my Bicycle’ at 5.30am, and after a huge breakfast, Edwards and his 700 companions hit the road to travel the length of Cornwall and into Devon. A further 8 days of over 100 miles a day followed, each evening tended to by a team of 20 physiotherapy students from Birmingham University.

Over the course of the ride, Edwards climbed over 15,000m in total, that’s over 11 times the height of Ben Nevis!

Edwards is elated by his achievement, saying “When I signed up for the ride, I was looking forward to seeing Britain as I have never seen it before, and doing battle with the elements – it never crossed my mind that it would be sunny all the way or that the prevailing South Westerly wind would blow!

I was motivated by the challenge of steep hills and long days in the saddle, and of course, the possibility of raising money for my charity. What I had not anticipated was the group riding experience. I met up with a group of 7 guys and we quickly became a team, riding effectively together.”

Reflex supported Edwards throughout this ride and Roland Dreesden, Reflex’s MD said “We are all very proud of Bryan, it’s a fantastic achievement that most of us could only dream about.”

Biggest and best ISE yet

Reflex ISE 2013Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) is a show that benefits Reflex in many ways. Roland, our MD, found it invaluable for networking with international partners. Our project managers were there to keep ahead of the changing demands within their project work. And the technical team focused on the technologies that we need to keep up-to-date with so that we can educate our customers. We took along thirteen customers too, who found it very useful for their strategic plans.

Below is a quick round up of the best of ISE 2013 from an integrator’s viewpoint.

Our first vote goes to the Crestron HD-XSP, a surround sound decoder that is no-frills – some may say basic. We liked its simplicity – it only has the functions that are needed for a professional install. It means the customer is not paying for functionality they don’t need.

The Samsung NL22B LED LCD transparent display shows information on a transparent glass surface. We liked the touch screen function and the built- in personal computer. It would be a superb choice in retail environments for product displays.

On the Epson stand the EB1410WI caught our eye. Interactive projectors have been around for a while but we liked the control module on the wall to select the functions and source. Great product for lecture theatres and training situations.

Ensemble Designs were showing the Brighteye Mitto Scan Converter. It’s elegant solution for auditoriums, its ideal where multiple presenters bring their own devices, and delivers high quality output through simple controls.

Also on our list, the Viper all-in-one capture, stream and VOD appliance. It’s a neat one box solution, perfect for rich media capture and streaming during live events or training sessions, very cool, small and beautifully designed package. We liked the striking design, the simple operation and the abundance of features although at £12,000 it might be beyond some budgets.

These products represent some of the components that allow integrators like Reflex to deliver great solutions for clients.
